Universal Replacement Refractory Panel 23.5" high X 27.5"wide x 1" thick (Dimensions may vary slightly)

If your current fireplace firebrick lining has cracks of 1/4" or more, you should replace the panels for safety reason.

These replacement fireplace refractory panels are engineered for extreme heat, have excellent thermal properties, and can be used in prefabricated and zero clearance gas or wood burning fireplaces. Panels are 1" thick, fiber reinforced and can be *cut to fit sizing requirements. They can be used as a left, right, bottom (hearth) or back panel, and are tapered on one edge for a finished look when used as a left or right panel. If one panel does not cover the area you have, you should order multiple panels and cut to fit.

**This item is NON-RETURNABLE**

*Brick imprint measures 2 1/4" x 7 1/2"

*Panels are easily cut with a skill saw and masonry blade.   We do not cut to custom sizes.

*Place item in cart to get shipping charges.

THE NATURE OF CRACKS
With the heating and cooling of refractory on both masonry and factory-built fireplaces, you can expect some minor cracks to occur....it's just the nature of things. Small hairline cracks in the refractory will almost always be present after repeated firings. When these fine cracks occur, you can rest assured that the homeowner can enjoy the fireplace with absolutely no danger! In fact, there is metal behind the refractory on a factory-built fireplace; therefore, even if the cracks get larger, the fireplace will still operate safely.

WHEN TO REPLACE REFRACTORY
One should consider replacing the refractory when large cracks occur. If the crack is larger than 1/16 inch (thickness of a nickel) the refractory should be changed. Also, if the refractory starts to crumble and fall apart in chunks, you should replace it. Refractory replacement on a factory-built fireplace is a relatively simple task, which is usually executed by simply unscrewing a bracket, removing the original refractory and installing the new panel. Repairs are much more difficult on a masonry fireplace because experienced brick masons must use special materials to patch the cracks...and it's much more expensive.

PREVENTION
To prevent the problem from happening in the first place, the homeowner should "condition" the refractory in a new fireplace by building relatively small fires for the first few burns and then gradually working up to larger fires. When adding wood to the fire, one should use caution not to throw logs into the firebox, which may hit and damage the back refractory. In almost all cases, the back refractory shows the most signs of wear and tear because it takes the most abuse from heat and log impact. Very rarely do side refractory panels need to be replaced.

CONCLUSION
As stated previously in this paper, factory built fireplace refractory is a highly engineered product, which if treated with respect, will give the homeowner many years of problem free service. Small cracks are to be expected. If fine cracks appear, it's not a safety issue! Consider replacing the refractory when large cracks are present, pieces of refractory start to break off or if you wish to change refractory for aesthetic reasons.

Cracked after 2nd fire

Panel was delivered in great condition. Had a seasoning fire, very small. Next fire was larger, hairline crack up the middle, no big deal. Then it started to widen with subsequent fires. Now looks like it's cracking in half! But, company is sending another one, no cost. I think I'll let this one sit in the sun for a while and then light a series of small fires, as they suggested. Didn't have to do that with original fireplace panel. Oh well.

Excellent customer service

Excellent customer service. Bought 3 panels. One came cracked. Sent a picture and received a response within the hour that they would be sending a replacement one right away. FYI, panels come uncured and are a grayish color.

Hopefully the panels last - thinner than advertised

I ordered multiple panels to replace all of my refractory panels. One panel arrived with a vertical crack, and this was promptly resolved by Woodstoves-Fireplaces and they sent me a new panel.

The overall quality of the panels is suspect. They are not square along the edges, which required some fine trimming to get everything to fit up properly. Despite advertised as 1" thick, they were more often 7/8" or less. One panel I cut measured less than 5/8" thick (19/32" to be precise) along a cut edge. Given the panel cost, I wasn't about to order another one just to be safe. Hopefully the panels hold up with this reduced thickness and don't constitute a fire danger.

As advertized

The panel is easily cut to size with a masonry blade and so far has stood up to several hot fires (after curing per directions). Good product, good value.
